About Calvert County, Maryland

One of the oldest counties in the United States, Calvert County was officially established in 1654 by Cecelius Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. During John Smith’s early exploration of the Chesapeake Bay, Smith was said to be the first westerner to see the peninsula of Calvert County and described it in his journal in 1608. The earliest recorded settlers of Calvert County were the Piscataway Indians who established villages along the river’s rich farmland and grew corn and tobacco. Later colonists, included the English who settled the area somewhere between 1637 and 1642, followed by Puritans, Huguenots, Quakers and Scots adopted farming of the very profitable tobacco crop. The original boundaries of Calvert County were later partitioned in 1695 into what is known today as Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s Counties.

Although Maryland was aligned with the North during the Civil War, Calvert County’s tobacco relied heavily on slavery to remain profitable. This created Confederate sympathizers adding further conflict to the war. Following the end of slavery, out of necessity the county shifted away from large plantations and turned to the rich waterways of the Chesapeake Bay. As a result, the southern-most part of the peninsula established a fishing fleet and commercial cannery by Captain Isaac Solomon in 1867 and is well-known today as Solomon’s Island.

The county seat of Calvert County was originally Calvertown on the Patuxent but was moved in 1722 to a tract of land known as “Williams’ Old Field”, later known as Prince Frederick.
